Our History

Grand Scale Live Steam was born out of the owner’s lifelong appreciation of all things mechanical with a quality of design and engineering that will always catch the eye of someone with a kindred spirit.

My passion extends to architecture from all eras, large industrial machines of all types to the ones you need a microscope to appreciate the detail and artistry held within.

I’ve spent my professional life working as a watchmaker, then as an instrument engineer in the surveying and scientific fields.

It has led me to develop a belief that one should create and repair items using his/her skills and then apply their knowledge to maintain the devices, which will enable them to modify and improve them if weaknesses exist.

It’s at this point that my interests shifted to classic motor vehicles and aircraft to railway and transport heritage groups.

It has sharpened my skills and knowledge in the engineering domain, but most importantly, it has strengthened my belief in making as well as repairing items using my hands.

As a longtime member of the model engineering community both in Australia and overseas the idea of setting up a business to sell fully completed working live steam models has taken a few years to develop.

I first needed to convince myself a market exists for enthusiasts without the necessary time, skills or funds to make their live steam locomotives.

I also needed to set aside the time to promote a market where a customer may seek to purchase a highly detailed model manufactured to the quality and standards we would feel comfortable putting our hard earned money into.

Our partners

After much research into international manufacturers of live steam model locomotives with evaluation of their product quality, availability and of course the selling price one stood out as a clear leader in this industry.

I purchased two of their models, one in gauge 3 (2.5”) and the other in 5” gauge to evaluate to make sure the quality and detail were up to a standard that I could accept before offering to the Australian market.

After conducting the due diligence, and research, we partnered with Bowande – an experienced manufacturer of live steam and electric model locomotives that has been in the industry for more than 30 years.

Bowande with other planned improvements will make Grand Scale Live Steam products the benchmark for railway models while providing high quality at a reasonable price.

Grand Scale Live Steam is proud to be associated with Bowande as its dealer in Australia and provides service and support for Bowande products.

Grand Scale Live Steam has maintained a keen interest in model railways and full-size railways for some decades and realizes the enjoyment that can be had from these activities.

If you’re a live steam model rail enthusiast, I’ll assure you that you’ll be happy to purchase one of our models.
